It can be said that Singapore is a touchy subject for Malaysians right now.

While netizens usually spend a maximum of two days on any particular viral topic, Jocelyn Chia has remained on the Twitter trending list for days now since her MH370 joke went viral on Wednesday.

Yesterday, an unsuspecting Canadian politician saw some Malaysians responding to her tweet, all because she complimented Singapore’s nasi lemak.

Catherina McKenna is Canada’s former Environment and Climate Change Minister and she is currently in Singapore to attend the 2023 Ecosperity Week.

On 6 June, McKenna posted a photo of a plate of nasi lemak and innocently proclaimed it as “the most delicious breakfast in Singapore”.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with her tweet as taste is subjective and McKenna is simply enjoying the food in a place she’s visiting.

However some Malaysians chanced upon her tweet and felt the need to tell McKenna how Malaysia’s nasi lemak is better.

One user @AbdFauzi shared a photo of a plate of nasi lemak with McKenna and told her: “This is how real nasi lemak looks like in Malaysia.”

McKenna replied by saying it looked delicious and said she would need to go to Kuala Lumpur to get somd nasi lemak and asked for recommendations.

Realising her tweet had gone viral, McKenna posted on Twitter yesterday that she appeared to have hit a real nerve with Malaysians who say nasi lemak is better in Malaysia.

She responded to the matter in a very diplomatic manner despite some of the tweets she received being unnecessary rants by people still sore about Chia’s stand-up comedy bit.

She also said the nasi lemak debate is, hands down, the best on Twitter. Not only that, Mckenna took the time to translate her tweet in Bahasa Malaysia, jokingly using “turun tangan” as the literal translation of “hands down”.
