A fire broke out at Wisma Jakel at Section 7, Shah Alam, on Sunday, 1 January, around 7am and caused an estimated loss of almost RM100 million.

Reports indicated that 80% of the five-storey building was razed due to a short circuit.

Sadly, a second fire broke out on the third floor of the building today (3 January) in a store room for curtains.

According to Malay Mail, the Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call around 12.45am.

The fire was brought to control around 1.45am and was fully extinguished by 3.07am.

Due to this incident, the Fire and Rescue Department is looking into arson or embers as possible causes for the second round of fire.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Datuk Norazam Khamis said there were no casualties and a detailed investigation of the fire, which destroyed 16 premises there, would take at least 14 days.

The Selangor JBPM has mobilised its K9 Tracker Dog Unit to the site to conduct forensic work and determine the cause of the incident.

Two dogs are being used to detect any petrol, oil or coal residue.

Currently, members of the public aren’t allowed in the area.

The company issued a response after the first fire broke out and promised to continue paying the salaries of its 500 workers.

Jakel Group director Datuk Seri Mohamed Faroz Mohamed Jakel said the company is currently scouting for a new business premise in Shah Alam and advised customers to head over to their other branches.

He also said the fire destroyed this year’s stock for Ramadan and Hari Raya.

The police have reminded the public not to make speculations about the matter out of respect for the affected parties.
