So Young is a South Korean singer and dancer who is a member of the female K-pop group ‘Fly With Me’. Her stage name is, well, Babi.
It seems that some Malaysians have taken it upon themselves to poke fun at her name – which is similar to a Malay curse word – on social media and left mean-spirited comments under her Instagram posts.
Fed up with the mockery, the young artiste put up a post pleading for Malaysians to stop. In the post, Babi asks “Why are you doing this to me?” and states “I didn’t know your country, but I don’t want to know it anymore” following the harassment by amused locals.
However, she did end her statement with an appreciation to those who’ve helped her.

This isn’t the first time Malaysians have harassed international artists over language differences, though.
Back in 2018, British singer-songwriter Dua Lipa was mocked by Malaysians over her use of the word ‘babi’ to address her father on social media.
However, the word ‘babi’ translates to ‘father’ in Albania, where her parents are from.
After the barrage of comments from Malaysians, Dua Lipa switched the caption of her Instagram post from “Happy Birthday babi” to “Happy Birthday, Dad”.
She later expressed her disappointment in an interview with fashion magazine L’Officiel, saying that “it was actually quite mean” because the singer was “obviously not talking in Malay.”
