A 10-year-old girl in Penang, K. Joanna Kristhina was upset when she was told she couldn’t use the playground in her neighbourhood, Taman Chai Leng in Seberang Jaya, as it was in disrepair.

She decided to write a letter to Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow and his deputy P Ramasamy to request repairs for the playground and explain the situation at hand.

Joanna described the bottles and furniture that were strewn all over the playground, including the broken stone benches.

She also mentioned the big trees that needed trimming or it’ll pose a danger to residents in the area.

She asked for the playground area to be lit just like how it was done for Peacock Park with colourful lights.

Joanna included two drawings, one of Chow and one of Ramasamy, in the letter and invited them to visit the playground in question.

I want it to be spruced up for children to play.

Her wish was granted

Joanna’s letter was written on 11 February 2023 and her wish was fulfilled within four months.

In a Facebook post, Chow said the caretaker government was delighted to fulfil Joanna’s request to fix the playground.

According to the state government’s bi-weekly magazine, Buletin Mutiara, the playground and the basketball court were given a makeover and are ready for public use.

Chow commended Joanna for speaking up her mind.

This is something to be emulated as when you have the courage to ask for something, you will be able to receive it. I hope that this would be seen as an inspiration for the children to voice their concerns or suggestions, be it at school, home or through letters to their respective assemblymen, councillors or even the mayor.

He said the state government will try to help fulfil requests according to their capacity.

Chow added that the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) can discuss further enhancing the facilities with Taman Chai Leng residents.
