The matter of a non-Muslim woman in Kelantan getting issued a compound notice for wearing shorts by the Kota Baru Municipal Council (MPKB) has been resolved.

Business owner, Sunny See Yeap Seng, said he has paid the compound as he didn’t want the issue to be politicised.

He was accompanied by Kelantan Chinese Association Federation president Dato’ Oie Poh Choon at the meet.

The sensational issue has been resolved peacefully. Because I don’t want the issue to be politicised.

What happened previously?

Sunny previously made the matter known when one of his employees, the woman in question, was fined for indecent wear at the workplace.

The post went viral and garnered lots of criticism online. The issue also brought Section 34 of Kelantan’s Business and Industrial Trade By-Laws 2019 to everyone’s attention.

Under that section, all Muslim and non-Muslim business owners have to ensure they are dressed decently at work and this includes their employees as well.

MPKB also posted pictures to show the woman’s actual compounded attire, which was different from the viral post.

MPKB said they regret that a misleading statement gave the public a negative perception towards the council and local authorities.

MPKB president Rosnazli Amin defended the decision to issue the compound to the woman.

However, local government development minister Nga Kor Ming urged the council to retract the compound notice issued to her yesterday.

Nga said it was the woman’s right to wear shorts as she was not a Muslim and her freedom was enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

I hope that all municipal councils and local governments would learn from this incident and don’t be overzealous in issuing fines. In this incident, the (MPKB officers) should have advised and educated her first. After all, she is not a Muslim.
