The Ministry of Economy recently introduced of a new system called “Xpats Gateway” which is anticipated to significantly reduce the duration of the work permit application process for expatriates and skill workers.

According to its minister, Rafizi Ramli, instead of the previous time frame of over 80 days, the new system aims to accomplish this within a mere five working days.

As reported by Nikkei Asia, the system which was launched on Thursday, aims to categorize companies into different tiers (ranging from Tier 1 to Tier 5) based on five main criteria.

These criteria include whether the employer operates in one of the country’s 12 key economic sectors, the stage of the company’s life cycle, its revenues, issued capital, and track record.

It also added that the 12 key economic areas encompass sectors such as oil, gas, energy, financial services, and communications content and infrastructure.

Additionally, Rafizi also noted that the previous work permit application process involved navigating through various bottlenecks at multiple agencies, which led to lengthy waiting periods of approximately three months.

This will not only speed up the application process but also make it easier for (companies that apply for their employees’ visas). They no longer need to go to many different agencies; all will be integrated within one application.

On the other hand, specifically pointing out the digital and technology sectors as crucial drivers of economic growth, Rafizi highlighted that the scarcity of talent and skills presents a significant hurdle for the expansion of companies.

To which he added that this would ultimately result in limited opportunities for higher wages and high-value jobs.
