Nowadays, robbers are coming up with unique and cunning ways to steal people’s money. Some use scam tactics with links, some sellers scammed customers for their money and some even use big names like LHDN to make scam calls.

However, not all scammers can get away with it. Especially those who couldn’t cover their tracks well.

Recently, a senior citizen had his debit card stolen last Saturday (25 March). The thing is, he didn’t even know his real card was stolen until it was too late.

Based on the story shared on Twitter by @paizmuhdd, he explained what happened to the 62-year-old victim.

The couple, caught on CCTV while they were buying the iPhone 13 Pro Max in Klang.

According to the police report, the incident happened on 25 March, 10 am, at Bank Rakyat, Banting when the victim wanted to withdraw some money from his BSN bank account.

However, his BSN card suddenly got stuck in the ATM machine. The man behind him then offered to help him get his card back. Little did he know, the man swapped his card with a dummy similar to his card and took the original one.

With the dummy card, the victim tried to withdraw his money from several banks afterwards but was unsuccessful. When he finally came to BSN Banting to check what was happening two days later (27 March), the bank official said that his money was gone.

There were a few transactions from 25 March to 27 March amounting to RM46,000. What’s even more atrocious was that with the help of his son, they detected an online transaction from his online banking account worth RM3700. The robber apparently used the card to buy an iPhone 13 Pro Max at a telecommunications store in Klang, Selangor.

Baharuddin filed a police report on 27 March and a few more again on 28 March to ask for CCTV footage from the earlier bank and the telecommunications store.

What he found on the CCTV was deeply appalling. At the store, a couple with a toddler is seen paying for an iPhone with excited faces. The man dressed in black and with a cap was seen casually entering the pin code while his wife, carrying a toddler came and kept the receipt and card beside him.

The victim suspected the man to be the same person who “helped” him at Bank Rakyat. He also suspects that the man swapped his card with another one and made purchases in those three days using his card.

Netizens pointed out that this is an old technique used by robbers

Based on some comments on his post, some people pointed out that this is apparently a classic technique robbers use to steal people’s bank cards.

First, they would compromise the ATM machine’s card reader part. Then when a victim fails to use the ATM or got his card stuck, they would then “try to help” and then swap the cards when the victim is unaware.

They would prepare a lot of dummy cards specifically for this reason. Some predicted that the robber would spy for the pin code while the victim is pressing them or just simply ask for it when they pretend to help the victim.

Either way, these robbers would easily target senior citizens who are prone to have a lot of money and wouldn’t probably have online banking.

Based on this unfortunate incident, we must bear in mind to be aware of our surroundings when we use the ATM. We are also advised to accompany our senior citizens to the bank if we can so things like this can be avoided.
