Local hip hop singer Altimet intends to donate all royalties from his song Aduh Malaysia to the family of Malaysian silver screen legend Tan Sri P. Ramlee.

Altimet announced the decision on his official Twitter and said Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s family will receive the royalties for the next 50 years.

Altimet’s decision is seen as kind to many Malaysians as the rights to the late entertainer’s works expire next year and will enter the public domain.

The legendary entertainer passed at the age of 44 in 1973 and the Copyright Act 1987 only protects an artist’s works for 50 years upon the date of the artist’s passing.

Altimet said it has always been his plan to donate the royalties since 2016 to Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s family to show his appreciation for the late entertainer’s dynasty in the entertainment industry.

The song Aduh Malaysia was inspired by Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s movie ‘Ali Baba Bujang Lapok.’

According to Berita Harian, Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s current heir, Sazali, 63, is touched by the offer but wants to have a face-to-face talk with Altimet to discuss the plans in detail.

Sazali said many have promised to help the family but the plans never materialised. To prevent further heartache, Sazali wants to talk to Altimet to get reassurance and confirmation.

To prevent the same situation from happening, I think it’s better if Altimet come and discuss with me, not just publicly announcing on social media. At the very least, I get to know what’s his plan and prevent the same thing from before from happening again.

Sazali also urged the government to reconsider extending the royalty contract from Music Authors Copyright Protection (MACP) that ends next year.

He said the family needs the royalty payments to pay for hospital transport along with his medical costs and also his wife’s, Hamidah Hitam.

The royalty payment that I get is not used for luxury spending. I have a doctor’s appointment every three months due to asthma and high blood pressure while my wife has spinal issues.

Both husband and wife do not have a stable income and couldn’t return to the workforce.
