Raja Bomoh Ibrahim Mat Zain made the news headlines on Wednesday, 5 January, when he performed a ‘Tepung Tawar’ ritual to protect the state of Perak from floods.

With help from his cousin named Puteri Zaleha, they conducted the ritual at Dataran JPS in Teluk Intan using ingredients such as turmeric, flowers, rice and plants.

Although he performed the ritual with good intentions, the state religious department claimed the ritual as heretical and contradicted Islamic teachings.

He’s going to sue the religious department

After discussing with his lawyers, Raja Bomoh said he’ll proceed to file a RM300 million defamation suit against the religious department that accused him of conducting a ritual that went against Islamic beliefs.

According to Focus Malaysia, Raja Bomoh said the ritual was solely for Allah SWT to prevent floods in Teluk Intan.

My purpose is so that there will not be any major floods in Teluk Intan. I did it so that Sungai Manik, Labu Kubong, Kampung Gajah, Parit and Bagan Datuk won’t get flooded. I prayed and used leaves and sticks that were released into the river.  My goal is to save the cemetery and to avoid the royal tomb from being swept away. My parents and many of my descendants were buried in Teluk Intan. It is not my intention to be prideful or want publicity.

According to Utusan, he has been waiting for a call from the Perak Islamic Affairs Department (JAIPk) and was disappointed by the way the religious department has responded.

Raja Bomoh said the department should have called him up for a discussion and handled the issue in a discreet manner.

He has also lodged a police report to rebut allegations that his ritual contravened Islamic beliefs on Thursday, 6 January, at the Teluk Intan police station.

In the police report, I have stated that the ritual did not involve or concern any party or individuals.

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Adnan Basri confirmed that the police received a report made by Raja Bomoh and has referred the report to the JAIPk for investigation.

JAIPk director Datuk Mohd Yusop Husin said the case will be investigated under Section 14 of the Perak Syariah Criminal Enactment 1992 for denigrating and insulting the religion of Islam.
