Hidden in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown and burrowed between 10 shophouses known as Kwai Chai Hong, is a secret art installation.

Accessible through the back doors of any of the shops or via a doorway in Lorong Panggung, Illuminating Shadows is a collaboration between the team behind Kwai Chai Hong and Alice Chang of Lai Lai Art Studio.

The installation features a ‘Giant Rabbit Sculpture’ and ‘Chaser Rabbits’ — a reference to the Jade Rabbit and Running Horse lantern initially created in conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival.

In the surrounding areas are helixes of holographic materials that represent the twists and turns in life.

The special properties of the materials creates a playground of lights and shadows, a wealth of creativity and possibilities for Instagram photos and Tik Tok videos.

We wanted to create something that was relevant to fellow Malaysians during these difficult times and remind ourselves that everything is beautiful if we choose to see the beauty in them

Zeen Chang, managing partner of Bai Chuan Management.

The Illuminating Shadows art installation will be open to the public daily from 9am to 10pm, from 29 October to 5 December. Strict SOPs will be observed within the vicinity.

Because of the nature of the installation, it is at its best on a clear day, in the hours before and after high noon.

After the sun sets, the installation will be illuminated using artificial lights that give it a whole new feel and look .

If the weather is not permissible, don’t worry. You can wait for the skies to clear at any of the 10 eateries at Kwai Chai Hong.
