The Mediterranean diet has enjoyed relative popularity as one of the healthiest cuisines globally, touted for reasons ranging from weight loss to diabetic control.

This is because a traditional Mediterranean diet is not just “a lot of fish and wine”, though those components are the most well-known. Their diet actually revolves around the region’s traditional fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, seafood, olive oil, and dairy—with perhaps a glass or two of red wine.

Now, Klang Valley’s own Maria’s SteakCafe, which brought us sizzling steaks and Ipoh-inspired cocktails, is introducing their new Mediterranean menu with two delicious meals; complete with salad, soup, and a main.

Maria’s Mediterranean Meals

Much like traditional Mediterranean diets, there isn’t much focus on carbs. Instead, the freshness of ingredients are highlighted, and there are plenty of fresh vegetables, nuts, and meat to fill you up.

Salad

For the salad starter, choose from either the Orange & Spinach Salad with poppy seed vinaigrette or Apple & Kale Salad with greek yoghurt dressing.

While I tend to stay away from vinaigrettes because of the vingery-smell and sour aftertaste, the poppy seed vinaigrette was a refreshing burst of flavour that only served to elevate the fresh salad and draw it together with a fragrant sweetness.

Soup

The soup is a delighful addition to your meal.

They also have two options of soup to go with your meal: the pumpkin soup or the minestrone soup.

While pumpkin soup is self-explanatory, minestrone soup is a tomatoe-y vegetable- and bean-based Italian soup. It’s a fantastic way to get your servings of vegetables in without feeling like you’re eating vegetables.

Main

Now for the main course of either Grilled Salmon with couscous Mediterranean style or the Australian grass-fed Tenderloin.

I got to try the grilled salmon on a bed of savoury couscous with tomato, sliced eggplants, and capers. Couscous is small steamed granules of rolled durum wheat semolina, or in other words, it’s like rice with the texture and taste of pasta.

The lightly grilled salmon paired very well with the umami of the couscous, and would definitely go great if paired with a refreshing light drink.

Healthy Yet Delicious

Most of the meal is made up of protein (meat and nuts) and vegetables, with less emphasis on carbs such as pasta or rice. However, the meal is a satisfying one, perfect even for someone hungry or with a big appetite.
