Drunk Driver Crashes Into Mosque In Penang

A 23-year-old man believed to be drunk lost control of his car and crashed into the gates of Masjid Jamek Tengah Berapi in Bukit Mertajam.
What you need to know: The accident happened at 2.30am on 12 July, resulting in the driver being taken to the Bukit Mertajam Hospital for treatment. The car was badly damaged by the impact, with the windshield shattered. Initial investigation found that he was driving under the influence of alcohol, though a urine test revealed no illegal substances.
Why it matters: Drunk driving has been a big issue in Malaysia for quite a while. After highly sensationalised road accidents, the Transport Ministry will be amending DUI laws to carry heavier punishments.
