According to experts, the country will continue to experience cold weather until February next year.

Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, deputy director general (strategic and technical) of the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), said that the cold weather phenomenon following the Northeast monsoon involved a change in cold winds sweeping in from mainland China and continuous rain clouds which began early November.

So, when there are a lot of rain clouds, in terms of the sun’s rays being somewhat shielded, which causes the temperature to be lower compared to other periods of the year

At the same time, he added that another contributing factor was the sun’s position in December, which was far into the southern atmosphere due to the earth’s rotation around the sun.

When the sun tilts to the south, the northern hemisphere will experience winter. This will affect countries (like Malaysia) on the equator

Hisham said that flat land areas in Kelantan, Pahang, and Perak, are likely to experience lower temperatures than others.

In 2014, the temperature in Kuala Krai, Kelantan was recorded between 17 and 18 degrees Celsius. So, it is possible that it could happen again in that area

According to Professor Datuk Dr. Azizan Abu Samah, a meteorologist at Universiti Malaya, the chilly weather will also last in a number of places, including Terengganu and Kedah.

Now if you are in Kedah, at night it will be cold while during the day it will be scorching hot

Professor Datuk Dr. Azizan Abu Samah, a meteorologist at Universiti Malaya

Azizan predicted that the winds that blew from China into Malaysia at the beginning of November would end in February 2023 and could cause temperatures to drop as low as 22 degrees Celsius.

The change in (direction of) the monsoonal wind will indeed affect the temperature and this situation will also be influenced by the geography or position of an area, if it is in Genting Highlands the temperature is even more chilly

Azizan also stated that the cold spell was caused by the Northeast monsoon surge from the north.

This season affects the amount of sunlight received in Malaysia which is reduced, with cloudy and rainy weather conditions. In addition, the chilly factor experienced is due to the Northeast wind blowing from Siberia,
