It looks like holidaymakers and travellers from red zones who balik kampung for the Christmas break have led to a spike in Kelantan’s Covid-19 cases.
Astro Awani reports the State Local Government, Housing and Health Committee chairman Dr Izani Husin explaining that the 27 December Covid-19 statistics showed 11 of the 31 new cases were from outside the state.
The return of Kelantanese who live in red zone areas, especially in Selangor, is believed to be biggest contributor to this sudden spike in cases.
Dr Izani has pleaded for those who plan to return home and meet their parents to please stay at home and to not move freely to prevent the spread Covid-19 in the community.
Kelantan officials were worried before the holidays began
Earlier in December, Kelantan health director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin had expressed his concerns that the arrival of travellers and holidaymakers for the year-end holidays will lead to new Covid-19 clusters in the state.
He also worried about their desire to play with floodwaters, as per norm during the rainy season, stating that for some locals, the floods are like a festival.
Kelantan currently has 9 active Covid-19 clusters with the biggest being Mengketil Cluster (88 cases), while Halban Cluster (47 cases) recently recorded a jump of 18 new cases. Peringkat, Kota Bharu is currently Kelantan’s only red zone.
