Malaysiakini reported that there may be plans to convert the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) into a COVID-19 facility.

Photos showing the plans and people at work in the park’s exhibition hall were previously circulated on social media and WhatsApp.

According to Malaysiakini’s sources, MAEPS will be used to house patients under investigation (PUIs) while they wait for their test results. This is to prevent them from being exposed to patients who have already tested positive for COVID-19.

When a PUI’s test returns positive, he or she will be transferred to hospitals dedicated to treating COVID-19 patients.

It is said that 400 beds are being set up in MAEPS at the moment.

As of now, there is no confirmation from MAEPS about the move to convert the venue into a COVID-19 facility yet. However, it is also mentioned that the Health Director-General will be making an announcement regarding this later today.

If the news about MAEPS is true, then it would be an additional facility on top of the 409 locations previously gazetted by the government as quarantine centres. The quarantine centres would be used to house confirmed patients who are asymptomatic or show mild symptoms, so that hospital beds can be reserved for more serious cases.
