A man who injured a convenience store worker and later took a selfie with the victim has been charged at the Bangi Magistrate’s Court today.

According to Bernama, Divagaran Uthaya Sooriyam pleaded not guilty when the charge was read out to him before magistrate Nurdiyanah Mohd Nawawi.

Divagaran, 32, was accused of intentionally causing harm to the convenience store worker at Ecohill Taipan in Semenyih on 20 June.

A video capturing the incident has since gone viral on social media.

The charge filed against Divagaran falls under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Nur Liyana Mohd Sulaiman proposed a bail amount of RM8,000 in one surety and requested that if bail is granted, the accused should refrain from contacting or disturbing the victim until the case is resolved.

However, defense counsel V Vickneswari requested a reduced bail amount, pointing out that the accused was the sole breadwinner of the family and had to care for his elderly parents.

The court approved bail of RM4,500 in one surety and scheduled the next mention of the case for August 15.

The incident described in the report involved two men entering the convenience store at approximately 5 am on June 20.

One of the individuals attempted to leave the store with three umbrellas without making a purchase.

Upon noticing this, the store worker intervened and requested the man to return the items, sparking a heated argument within the store.

The situation escalated when the man responded aggressively, physically assaulting the worker by punching and kicking them.

Eventually, the other individual present tried to defuse the altercation.

The man responsible for injuring the worker gained attention in the media due to a viral selfie he took with the injured worker, who had a bloodied nose, further highlighting the severity of the incident.
