With Hari Raya Aidiladha just around the corner, naturally traffic on Malaysian highways are expected to increase.

According to Mohd Yusuf Abdul Aziz, the operations senior general manager of PLUS, around two million vehicles are expected to use the highways especially on peak days, such as June 28 (Wednesday) and July 1 (Saturday), which would be an increase of 12% from the daily average of 1.7 million vehicles, as reported by The Star.

ANIH Berhad, that operates the East Coast Expressway 1 (LPT1) and the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK) in a statement said over one million vehicles are expected to use the KLK during the holiday season, a phenomenal 70% increase.

Imran Gulcharan Abdullah, CEO of ANIH Berhad said around 430,000 cars are estimated to commute along the LPT1, seeing a significant 60% increase.

To reduce the traffic congestions, both expressways have taken steps to help the people have a smooth journey.

ANIH Berhad has released a Travel Time Advisory (TTA) to help the people in their effort to plan their journey for the festive season.

Furthermore, ANIH Berhad stated that they have increased their employees by 20% to reduce traffic congestion during this festive season.

Included in this are more employees at toll booths, LPT Ronda teams, the Traffic Control Centre (TCC), and the dispatch of more than 170 RELA members to key highway points.

If additional toll lanes for manual transactions are required, ANIH Berhad will activate them and, if necessary, execute contra-flow strategies at the proper locations.

To avoid delays or inconveniences at toll plazas, road users are advised to make sure they have enough money in their Touch ‘n Go and e-wallets before setting off.

PLUS has also taken the initiative to activate the “Smartlane” from 24 June to 2 July 2023 from 10am to 6pm, where the current left-most lane is opened as a second lane during that time to boost its capacity and help with traffic flow during the morning rush hour.

Highway users can learn more about the “Smartlane” routes by looking for the “SmartLane” signs or by visiting PLUS’ social media pages on Facebook and Twitter.

Below is a list of the locations with the “Smartlane”:

  1. Tapah Route (KM306.7) to Gopeng Junction (KM297.0) – northbound
  2. Slim River Route (KM367.3) to the Sungkai Junction entrance (KM354.1) – northbound
  3. R&R Rawang (KM439.6) to Sungai Buaya Intersection (KM435.5) – northbound
  4. Port Dickson Junction (KM260.0) to Seremban Junction (KM263.1) -northbound
  5. Senai Utara Junction (KM19.0) to Kulai Junction (KM27.0) – northbound

Highway users also need to make sure that their vehicles are in good condition for long journeys.

It is vital to make sure the tyres, black oil, brakes, lights, battery, and radiator are in tip top condition.

As mentioned above, the number of vehicles are going to increase on these highways, so it is important to adhere to traffic rules, especially concerning speed to ensure that everyone on the road will have a safe journey.
