In Malaysia, it is common to incorporate vibrant and eye-catching elements into wedding receptions.

However, one particular reception has taken it to a whole new level of whimsy.

The event featured a cheerful and playful greeting gesture in the form of colorful smoke, leaving viewers amused and entertained.

Amidst the laughter and enjoyment under the video posted by TikTok user @qmslyan4, some netizens humorously remarked that the colorful smoke would serve as a perfect deterrent for pesky gossiping aunties or as we commonly know them, mak cik bawangs.

What Are Smoke Sticks and How Are They Made?

Colored smoke sticks have become increasingly popular for various events, celebrations, and artistic performances.

While they add a vibrant and visually captivating element to the environment, there are often concerns regarding the composition of these sticks, whether they stain clothes, and if they pose any risks in terms of toxicity.

Composition of Colored Smoke Sticks

Colored smoke sticks typically consist of a few key ingredients that work together to produce the vivid smoke effect and while the exact formulations may vary between manufacturers, the fundamental components generally include:

1. Potassium Nitrate

This chemical compound, commonly used in fireworks, serves as an oxidizer, providing the necessary oxygen to facilitate the smoke production process.

2. Dyes or Pigments

These substances are responsible for the vibrant colors produced by the smoke.

3. Binders

To hold the composition together, binders like sugar or starch are often used. These ingredients contribute to the stick-like form of the product.

4. Cool Burning Agents

Colored smoke sticks are designed to burn at a relatively low temperature, ensuring safety during use. Hence, cool burning agents like lactose or sodium bicarbonate help achieve this effect.

Do They Stain Clothes or Skin?

One common concern associated with colored smoke sticks is whether they stain clothing and skin.

While colored smoke is essentially composed of dyes or pigments, the likelihood of staining garments can vary depending on several factors, including the concentration and type of dye used, the duration of exposure, and the fabric composition.

In general, colored smoke sticks may leave temporary stains on fabrics, particularly if the smoke comes into direct contact with the material for an extended period.

The intensity of the stain can range from light discoloration to more noticeable marks.

So please inform guests to wear clothing that they don’t mind potentially staining. You know, especially for those gender reveal parties we love holding.

Or, consider using protective clothing to minimize contact between the smoke and your garments.

So, Toxic or Not?

Just like any other thing that emits smoke and fire such as firecrackers or smoke bombs, the safety of using colored smoke sticks largely depends on following the manufacturer’s instructions and employing them in a well-ventilated area.

While colored smoke sticks do produce smoke, which may contain small particles and chemical byproducts, the immediate health risks are generally low when used as directed.

However, it is important to note that inhaling any type of smoke, including colored smoke, can irritate the respiratory system.

Individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions or sensitivities may be more susceptible to adverse effects.

To minimize potential risks, it is advisable to use colored smoke sticks in open spaces, away from individuals who may be sensitive to airborne particles.

As for the toxicity of the chemicals used in colored smoke sticks, the components are typically considered safe when used as intended.

However, ingestion or excessive exposure to the components may pose health risks.

Hence, it is crucial to keep colored smoke sticks out of reach of children and avoid direct contact with the skin or eyes.

And in any case of accidental ingestion or prolonged exposure, it is recommended to seek medical assistance immediately.

Nevertheless, understanding their composition and potential effects is crucial for safe and responsible use.
