Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah the national and queen of water skiing has once again proven herself by bringing the country’s name to the international podium when she won the bronze medal in the International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation (IWWF) Under-21 Championships in Boca Laguna, Mexico.

In the event that took place from 13 June to 17 June 2023, Aaliyah won the bronze medal in the Jump discipline from the Cable Ski event.

According to the IWWF website, Aaliyah recorded a jump of 45.2 meters which earned her the podium. Augistina Varas from Chile earned the gold with a jump of 49.5 m while Sade Ferguson from Australia made the silver with a jump of 45.3m.

Aaliyah also managed to grab the 4th position in the overall category of the Cable Ski event in the competition.

However, Aaliyah has a big challenge when dividing her time between her studies and her passion for skiing.

“It is difficult to balance water skiing training with studies because this is my first semester at university” she stated upon arriving in Mexico for the competition as reported by Sinar Daily.

“But I’m indeed very happy for the results from my academic efforts as it is very important for me that I put in my share of hard work to justify my sponsors’ support for my career in school as well as in sport,”

Aaliyah received a scholarship worth of RM 1.1 million from Sime Darby which allowed Aaliyah to practice at Florida Southern College’s top-notch waterski facilities while pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology as reported by The New Straits Times.

Water Skiing Sports.

Water skiing is a physically tricky activity that also requires highly coordinated movements, intense upper body torques, continuous isometric contractions, and close to maximum load on the anaerobic system.

A skier is towed behind a powerboat while using one or more skis to skim the water’s surface.

According to an article by Decathlon, in the year 1922, Ralph Samuelson invented the first water skis by using a pair of boards as skis and a clothesline as a tow rope on Lake Pepin in Lake City, Minnesota. After years of development, the activity was included in the Olympics as a demonstration sport in 1972.

At present times, the sport is being competed worldwide with over 900 competitions sanctioned annually.

It was the first towed sport which later spawned a number of related activities like slalom, trick and ski jumping, wakeboarding and waker suffering, tubing, and kneeboarding.

This sport which began with a man using two boards and a rope has now grown into an international sport which is enjoyed by many.
