Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is expected to end its 25-year in-flight catering contract with Brahim’s Holdings when the contract expires at the end of this month.
This move is celebrated by many netizens who expressed their relief after putting up with subpar meals served while flying with the national airline carrier.
Most netizens who have tasted MAS in-flight meals said the food quality was disappointing, but have put up with it out of “patriotism.”
Back in May, Malaysian comedian Arwind Kumar also criticised the tasteless vegetarian food during his flight to India.
Serving poor-quality meals is unacceptable for a national airline carrier as the airline is supposed to be at the forefront of Malaysian hospitality in air travel.
A netizen who recently flew to Jakarta via MAS said the food served was stale while another person lamented that Malaysia’s national dish, the nasi lemak, was tasteless.
With the winds of change coming, some netizens suggest healthier meal options to be available on board.
They also believe letting other companies bid for the in-flight catering contract would promote healthy competition and provide improved meals for passengers.
Meanwhile, a netizen hopes that it is not just a rebranding exercise and rehiring of the same company.
thank God. Few days ago I took a flight to Jakarta via MAS and the quality of the food served on board business class cabin was stale. Kita ni Malaysian "terima je la" quality food macam tu cos patriotism due to our airline kan. Hopefully MAS will hire Food Caterer yang faham…

MAS food is so tasteless & the nasi lemak quality is down the drain

Many years ago, I enjoyed the inflight food thoroughly regardless where I flew from. The last experience was pretty bad enroute to Oz. However, coming back from Oz it was pretty decent. So, how is it that from KL, the food is bad? We pride ourselves on our food culture…?

Tukar lah. Brahim dah too complacent, need a new player in the industry. Change! For better in flight experience. #MH

The 25 years catering monogamy needs to end right now. I mean how can nasi lemak, a national dish, taste so bad and is easily the most unpopular inflight dish? I thought the whole MAS agenda is to push forward the Malaysian hospitality. Or is it no longer the case?

Now is the time to get healthy food onboard, cheap, delicious and healthy food. All these Brahim foods are full of cholesterol and saturated fats.

Better not be some convoluted rebranding/hiring of the same people… 😄 Most importantly, hopefully this will improve the offering.

What’s next for MAS?
According to Malay Mail, sources said it’s likely that MAS would operate its own in-flight catering service under the MAS Awana subsidiary.
However, MAS Awana does not yet have the full capacity to operate entirely on its own.
Some of the in-house catering work such as transporting meals to aircraft would be subcontracted to a new vendor Pos Aviation In-flight Catering, a subsidiary of Pos Aviation Sdn Bhd.
Pos Aviation has experience in providing flight catering services to MAB Kargo Sdn Bhd, the cargo unit of MAG.
MAS Awana, formerly MAS Catering (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, has catered in-flight meals for Malaysia Airlines, MASwings, and foreign carriers at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport.
The company currently also caters food and beverages for Malaysia Airlines’ Golden Lounges at KLIA Terminal 1.
