Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed today that negotiations to bring fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, famously known as Jho Low, back to Malaysia are underway.

“Discussions (on the matter) are underway with the countries involved through the proper diplomatic channels,” he told reporters at the Malaysian Red Crescent headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

According to NST, besides declining to elaborate on the matter, Anwar also declined to confirm if the negotiations involved China, as rumours have it that the Malaysian fugitive has been staying there.

We’re not sure if we tracked Jho Low in China. We never confirmed the country (where Jho Low is believed to be hiding).

That (bringing back Jho Low) has been our position and we have been very tough on that since day one.

He further said that the process to repatriate Low is a complicated one as it involves multiple countries, intelligence services, Interpol and others.

“Having said that, countries involved are cooperating, staying in touch and providing their support,” he said.

However, when asked if the country involved was China, Anwar replied, “No, I can’t comment on that.”

Last month, Bradley Hope, a former Wall Street Journal reporter and also the co-author of the book “Billion Dollar Whale” about the 1MDB saga, suggested on his website that the Malaysian government was negotiating with China over Jho Low’s extradition.

“This would be huge, fascinating, and mark the end of the main storyline of the scandal, from its founding in 2009 to its collapse amid in 2015 and all the insane partying and spending along the way until 2023,” wrote Hope in his website which is dedicated to tracking down the fugitive businessman behind the 1MBD scandal.

Hope said the arrangement would involve handing over Low to Malaysia, as well as “wiping the slate clean” over China’s alleged involvement in Low’s deals to cover up the 1MDB fraud.
