There is a popular saying in English which states ‘old is gold’. While the urban culture is surrounded by new technologies and gadgets, there are still some in this world who stick to their traditional ways.

Recently, the EcoNusa Foundation in Indonesia shared a video about the Koba-Koba, a unique traditional umbrella that is still being used by the people of the Moi Tribe.

From the video, it can be observed that the Koba-Koba is made from forest Pandan leaves and is sewn using tree barks.

The lady in the video demonstrated how easy it is to use one. The Koba-Koba can be folded into four and can be easily carried around in a bag.

“When it rains we use, when it doesn’t we fold.”

According to the West Papua Diary, the native tribe of Sorong, the Moi, is noted for its unique beliefs that are contrary to modern life. The Moi tribe has a unique culture, language, social system, and educational framework.

The opening of the city of Sorong and the development projects carried out by the government of West Papua had an impact on the Moi tribe.

This is because the Moi Tribe continues to be marginalised.

Many may say that in the 21st century, people are not connected to their traditional roots. However, this statement perhaps doesn’t apply in all cases.

No matter how modernised Malaysians can be, when the time comes, we will always remain connected to our roots.

Such an instance is Hari Raya. The festive season is just around the corner, and Malaysians are already on their journey to return to their hometowns.

Every Raya morning, we can see folk in their traditional clothes, visiting others and enjoying the company of friends and family.

It is true that we are living in a world that everything moves fast, and we have no choice to keep up with it. Nevertheless, it is important to never forget our culture and roots.
