Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has appointed five individuals to advise him in his capacity as finance minister, Malay Mail reported.

In a statement, Anwar said former Petronas CEO Hassan Marican is appointed to lead the board.

The other four in the appointed group are FPO Ventures Sdn Bhd (FVSB) executive chairman Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ali, Sarawak Energy Bhd chairman Datuk Abdul Hamed Sapawi, and economists Sunway University economics studies director Professor Dr Yeah Kim Leng and Universiti Malaya distinguished professor of economics Datuk Rajah Rasiah.

The appointed individuals on the board will not receive any pay.

This comes after news on 3 January broke that his daughter, Nurul Izzah, was appointed as his senior adviser on economics and finance on a pro-bono basis.

Her appointment drew criticism from many who accuse Anwar of nepotism. Anwar has dismissed the claim and said Nurul Izzah was qualified for the role.

Nurul Izzah has a second degree in public policy from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

According to The Vibes, Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) president Muhammad Mohan suggested that Nurul Izzah report to Hassan, who’s the lead adviser in the ministry, and work together as a group of advisers instead of dealing directly with Anwar.

He also suggested that her title be changed to “senior adviser on compliance and good governance” to better reflect her workload related to managing government contracts and tenders.
