Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a wonderful time filled with festive traditions, sweet moments with loved ones, and the opportunity to take a break from the routines of daily life.

But let’s not sugarcoat it, for some people, Hari Raya might be a sour occasion they’d rather avoid than celebrate.

This Aidilfitri, Julie’s Biscuits brings us a colorful video titled Kisah Raya P.ER.I.T which follows the sweet and sour story of Farah and her single mother, Timah. On their way balik kampung for Hari Raya, Farah tells her mom that they seem to arrive late every year, and the reasons almost always don’t make sense. Little did Farah know, the real reason behind their tardiness is something much more personal to her mom.

As we all (hopefully) know by now, the date for Hari Raya is determined by the appearance of the crescent moon or the anak bulan. On the 29th of each Islamic calendar month, Muslims will look to see if the crescent moon is visible in the sky after sunset.

If they can see the moon, then the new month will begin the next day, and they celebrate Hari Raya. But what if the moon phase cycle suddenly comes to a halt? And there’s no crescent moon sighting to determine when we’re gonna celebrate Hari Raya?

In Kisah Raya P.E.R.I.T, Timah goes to great lengths to make the moon ‘disappear’ and stop Hari Raya. But will her plans come to pass?

Watch Julie’s Kisah Raya P.E.R.I.T below to find out what Farah’s mom (with help from a few accomplices) has planned for Hari Raya this year, or if they get to celebrate Hari Raya at all!

Just because we don’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there

The ad explores the hidden struggles single mothers face during the festive season. Hari Raya is a time for families to get together and celebrate. But for some single mothers, Hari Raya isn’t a joyous occasion at all. The loneliness, the sneers from relatives, and the inconsiderate questions from people who know better than to ask is a painful reminder of the experiences they’ve been through.

Kisah Raya P.E.R.I.T is an eye-opener to the reality of single parents everywhere. Their role is not only to be a mother or father. They take up all the mantles necessary to provide the best for their children, and most of the time their sacrifices go unnoticed. During Hari Raya, extended families only pass their judgements based on what they see on the surface and rarely take the effort to understand what these parents are going through.

Instead of picking at their wounds, Hari Raya is a time to embrace our family, regardless of who they’ve been or what they’re going through. It’s a time to share joy and spread kindness instead of harbouring bitterness. Rather than bringing up tragedies that are best left in the past, the festive season is a time to show love to the ones who need it the most.

Spread love this Hari Raya
