More M’sian women are getting heart attacks; here’s what you need to know

It doesn’t seem good for females out there.

Recently, our deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said there’s anincrease of women patients over the years.

She said it has increased from 20% in 2014 to 22% in 2017.

Women deserve special attention in this disease. Traditionally we have associated heart disease affecting more men than women.

Heart disease is a condition that affects both men and women, so take note if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • Pressure, tightness, pain, or a squeezing or aching sensation in your chest or arms that may spread to your neck, jaw or back
  • Nausea, indigestion, heartburn or abdominal pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cold sweat
  • Fatigue
  • Lightheadedness or sudden dizziness

It’s always best to consult healthcare professionals if you’re experiencing any of the symptoms.

There are also a few preventive measures that you can do :

  • Control blood pressure. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease. It’s important to get your blood pressure checked regularly – at least once a year for most adults.
  • Keep your cholesterol levels under control. High levels of cholesterol can clog your arteries and raise your risk of coronary artery disease and heart attack.
  • Stay healthy. Being overweight or having obesity can increase your risk for heart disease.
  • Eating healthy. Try to limit saturated fats, foods high in sodium, and added sugars. Eat plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, and whole grains.

Even though we can look up for the symptoms online, be sure to talk to your doctors to know for certain.

As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.
