Minister Says Nightclubs Should Close, Party At Home. Netizens Point Out He Didn’t Stay Home Either

Some cursed him out. Some raised concerns over the socio-economic impact of such a move.

Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Dr. Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali agrees with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin that bars, pubs, and nightclubs in Malaysia should remain closed throughout the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) period and that it was even better if they shut down for good.

Khairuddin also known by his alias Ustaz Khairuddin at-Takiri, implied on Facebook that it was preferable for the country’s nightlife scene to come to an end forever and that the democratic voice of the majority are on his side on this one.

at-Takiri said that there was no need for people to “party”, “get drunk”, and “cause various other problems” and it was better for people to entertain themselves at home.

Comments on the minister’s statements show a number of Malaysians agreeing with his thoughts, saying that it was good to be rid the country of alcohol.

Others were keener to tell the minister that people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones and shared their own democratic views.

at-Takiri is currently the subject of public discourse for flaunting mandatory Covid-19 quarantine orders following a recent overseas trip to Turkey.

While some appeared to be looking at the bigger picture and were more concerned over the socio-economic implications of such blanket opinions on the night-entertainment industry, as not only is it a source of leisure for the masses, the industry obviously also serves the livelihoods of many Malaysians.

Recently Malaysiakini had quoted the PM as saying that bars and pubs would remain closed throughout the RMCO, which is set to end at the start of 2021, as it would be difficult to maintain Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP).

In response, The Federation of Malaysian Entertainment Industry expressed shock over the move, revealing concerns that many businesses are struggling to stay afloat throughout the pandemic.
