Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali appeared in Parliament on July 13, despite only returning from Turkey six days prior, clearly not serving his full 14-day mandatory quarantine.

What you need to know: A source close to the minister noted that he had tested negative for Covid-19, however. The source also mentioned that his trip to Turkey was granted permission by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and at that time, Turkey was still a green zone country.

Who said what: Khairuddin predecessor, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, noted that he was in Parliament on July 13, even though he had only returned to Malaysia six days prior. She said that this was a clear breach of the standard operating procedures. Former deputy health minister Dr Lee Boon Chye also noted that Covid-19 cases in Turkey were much more severe than Malaysia, with over 250,000 confirmed cases and 6,000 deaths.

Why it matters: A 14-day quarantine is mandatory for anyone returning to Malaysia from other countries, to be served in designated government quarantine centers. Covid-19 has a long incubation period, so it is dangerous to not serve the full quarantine period or breach quarantines.

Most notably, a man returning from India breached his home quarantine and started the Sivagangga cluster, which has already infected 43 people in 3 different states.
