Instagram User Incurs Netizens’ Wrath Over Racist Remark On Story At AR Rahman Concert

She used the K word to describe what she thought was a Tamil song during the AR Rahman concert.

Last Saturday (28 January), the AR Rahman concert, ‘Secret of Success: Live in Malaysia 2023’ was held at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium.

The concert saw some 60,000 attendees, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil was also present with his wife to witness the international spectacle.

AR Rahman’s concert certainly brought together a multiracial crowd that night, especially with Dato Siti Nurhaliza singing a Tamil song in the concert too.

However, with such a mixed crowd, not everyone appreciated the concert as AR Rahman’s die-hard fans would.

One Instagram user named Fatin Amyra Lee posted on her Instagram story (IGS) about her experience at the concert. In her IGS, she used a term that was offensive to Indians.

The caption on her IGS was “These Kel**g songs are making me dizzy. (I) Want Hindustani songs, please. Just waiting for Tokti (Siti Nurhaliza) now…”.

The woman’s nonchalant use of the offensive word made many people angry.

She used the word to describe what she thought was a Tamil song but it was actually a Hindi song.

Some were saying that she must have gotten a free ticket which was why she disrespected the performance with the racial slur.

Some backed her up claiming that she is from Kelantan and people there allegedly often use the term and are not aware it is derogatory.

She has since deleted the IGS and issued a public apology. In her apology, she said that she didn’t mean any racist remarks. She said that she was probably too overwhelmed being in a huge concert and she didn’t think about her words carefully.

Another one bites the dust

Not only did a person who went to the concert post a racial slur, but somebody else who didn’t even go to the concert also commented something racist in a public newspaper portal’s social post.

Hanis Nadiah Onn, a national women’s field hockey player, commented on Kosmo Online’s post about AR Rahman’s concert with the comment “It must smell nice in there.”

Hanis also got shamed by netizens and issued a public apology afterwards.

In her apology, she stated that in her 10 years of experience in the hockey world, she also defended Malaysia in a multiracial team and she was sorry about her negligence on the negative connotation of her comment.

It doesn’t matter if you are brought up learning that word or joke around with friends, degrading terms towards other races should never be normalised, let alone in a public setting.

Malaysians are in a multiracial country, there’s no space for hate or insensitivity.
