GE15: KJ In Sungai Buloh?

The Sungai Buloh parliamentary seat, which has been held by PKR’s R. Sivarasa for the last three terms, is traditionally contested by MIC for BN, although it has a sizeable number of Malay registered voters.

It was previously confirmed that caretaker Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar will not be defending his Rembau parliamentary seat in the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15).

As it is not yet known where he will go, Khairy is now being linked to Sungai Buloh.

According to The Star, talks of Khairy, popularly known as KJ, contesting the seat held by PKR’s R. Sivarasa for the last three terms has been received well by the UMNO grassroots in the constituency.

“Khairy is a popular figure among the people, especially after how well he managed the Covid-19 pandemic. His popularity will get him the votes,” the English daily reported quoting an UMNO source.

Although Khairy had never stood in an election outside of Negeri Sembilan in the past, it would not be hard for the former UMNO Youth chief to garner support from party members there as the Sungai Buloh UMNO division chief Datuk Megat Firdouz Megat Junid has been his political secretary since he was still the youth and sports minister under the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

Megat Firdouz however was coy on the possibility of Khairy contesting in Sungai Buloh in GE15.

“Where did you hear this? Even I haven’t heard anything,” he was quoted as saying.

He however said that it would be good for BN if UMNO were to contest the Sungai Buloh seat since 65% of the voters there are Malays.

The seat was traditionally contested by MIC in the past.

“Maybe we should be given a chance (to contest),” added Megat Firdouz.

Khairy is poised to contest in a parliamentary seat that BN had lost to PH in the last general election after he was asked to give way to UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan to contest the Rembau parliamentary seat in GE15 set to take place on 19 November.

The three-term Rembau MP had also previously said that he was offered to contest in seats that PH won in the last general election – speculated to be either Kuala Pilah, Tampin or Port Dickson, all in Negeri Sembilan – although he stopped short of naming which seat exactly.
