As many as 1,099 healthcare workers under the Health Ministry have contracted Covid-19 since the beginning of the outbreak in Malaysia.

Responding to a question posed during his daily Covid-19 press conference, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said, despite this, a majority of the cases involving healthcare workers were contracted via community infections.

Out of the total, 949 healthcare workers had contracted the infection from the community, such as when they attended social gatherings including weddings.

He added that all frontline staff – regardless if they had tested positive or were only exposed to positive colleagues – were immediately quarantined to ensure the safety of other members of staff.

The important thing is that they have to comply with the SOP. For example, if they served in the ICU or Covid-19 wards they have to comply with the SOP so as not to be infected.

He also said that healthcare workers contracting Covid-19 was one of the issues that arose since the second wave of infections in the country.
