In response, Transport Minister Datuk Sri Wee Ka Siong announced that the transit rails will be undergoing a maintenance period, lasting for six months, beginning from today, 26 May 2022.

This will involve level four maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of the 28 sets of 818 series trains, which was an important process to extend the life span of the trains.

Apart from that, he said, the government would receive 19 new types of trains in the fourth quarter of next year for the Kelana Jaya route.

This ‘mid-life refurbishment’ of the Kelanga Jaya LRT line will cost around RM800 million.

However, during this maintenance period, trains will be operating at a slower frequency.

For the Kelana Jaya LRT line, trains will operate at a 4-minute interval during peak hours instead of the previous 2.5-minute interval. During off-peak hours, trains will have a 7-minute interval like usual.

For the Kajang MRT line, trains will have a 6-minute interval during peak hours instead of the previous 4-minute interval. During off-peak hours, trains will have a 10-minute interval.

Both the LRT and MRT lines will operate on the off-peak frequency on weekends as well, which is an improvement from their previous schedule earlier this year, which saw a 10-minute interval for the Kelana Jaya LRT line and a 12-minute interval for the Kajang MRT line.

Still, these are the steps taken by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd to improve their services for the public and ensure that the trains are operating at tip-top condition.
