Malaysia is positioned to target Chinese tourists with its ‘Durian Tourism 2023’ campaign to promote the durian season nationwide this year.
The campaign continues last year’s successful initiative targeting domestic tourists and will now be extended to several states, including Johor, Pahang, Selangor, Perak, Kedah, and Perlis.
Tour operator Huntlink Jong said Tourism Malaysia is embarking on a campaign marketed to Chinese tourists in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
The aim is to showcase the unique taste and quality of Malaysian durians compared to those produced in other countries and to encourage more Chinese tourists to visit Malaysia.
The durian tourism packages will offer industry players opportunities to diversify their activities beyond just durian picking.
Another tour operator, Amity Wong, said the packages would include opportunities to enjoy other local fruits and different types of drinks, experience village life, and participate in side sports activities.
She said Chinese tourists come to Malaysia just for durian because Malaysian durians are known to be of high quality and have a unique taste, which cannot be found in other countries.
The tour operators spoke on the sidelines of the International Travel Expo (ITE) 2023, an annual travel trade show in Hong Kong.
ITE 2023 showcased a wide range of travel products and services worldwide, including airline tickets and travel packages, accommodation options such as hotels, resorts, vacation rentals and tour packages and travel itineraries.

Durian is a popular fruit in China, but the durians grown in Malaysia have a distinct flavour and texture that many Chinese tourists find appealing.
Additionally, the durian season in Malaysia coincides with the summer holidays in China, making it an ideal time for Chinese tourists to visit Malaysia and experience the unique taste of Malaysian durians.
18 Packages To Choose From
The ‘Durian Tourism 2023’ campaign by Tourism Malaysia aims to promote the durian season across the country and attract more Chinese tourists to Malaysia.
Tourists will have 18 packages, each offering a unique durian experience.
Visitors can enjoy everything from durian-themed cooking classes to guided tours of orchards and plantations.
Some packages include visits to durian festivals and markets, as well as opportunities to taste different varieties of the fruit.
The campaign offers a range of packages that include not only durian picking but also other local fruits, drinks, village life experiences, and side sports activities.
By offering these packages, Tourism Malaysia hopes to diversify the activities of industry players and impact local economic activities while promoting sustainable tourism.
Unique Taste And Quality Of Malaysian Durians
Malaysia durian is considered the best due to its unique taste and quality. The country has a variety of durian species, each with its distinct flavour and texture.
Unlike other countries, Malaysian durians are known for their rich, creamy, and sweet taste.
The fruit is also known for its pungent odour, which can be off-putting to some but is considered a hallmark of its quality.
Malaysia’s tropical climate and fertile soil provide ideal growing conditions for durian trees, allowing them to produce high-quality fruit all year round.

Some of the most popular breeds of durians in Malaysia include Musang King or Mao Shan Wang, D24, D101, XO, Red Prawn, and Black Thorn.
