The industry sectors recently allowed to operate during the latest extension of the movement control order (MCO) only apply to those businesses located in green zone areas, not nationwide.

Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar who is the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Co-operatives clarified this fact saying that the list of the industry sectors was created by a special Cabinet committee.

He said this committee was formed two weeks ago during a Cabinet meeting and assigned to study the possibility of allowing certain businesses to resume operations.

The committee came up with the report and identified certain businesses, and later after several discussions, it was agreed only to operationalise certain businesses and services in the ‘Covid-19 green areas’ of the country.

As of 11 April, there are 29 districts nationwide categorised as green zones with no Covid-19 cases by the Health Ministry. They consist of four districts on the Peninsular and 25 districts in East Malaysia.

According to The Borneo Post, Wan Junaidi also explained that the special committee is indeed concerned about the effect of a prolonged MCO on the country’s economy, taking note of the fact that there have been businesses from all sectors concerned with their sustainability and also international firms which have invested billions in the country.

He added that there have been studies done by the government, banks, and institutes that suggested there will be an unprecedented level of unemployment and collapsed businesses in the next couple of weeks if companies are not allowed to resume operations.
