The search for missing Malaysian Everest 2023 (ME 2023) climber Muhammad Hawari Hashim, 33, will resume next year, New Straits Times reported.

The Altitude Exploration Club, which was in charge of the Malaysia Everest 2023 programme, will form a search and rescue (SAR) team next year to continue to look for the missing climber.

Hawari, a Penang State Museum employee for over 10 years, went missing on 19 May 2023 while making his descent from the summit of Mount Everest.

ME2023 mission head Azim Afif Ishak said the SAR team will start its operation as soon as Mount Everest is reopened, from the beginning of the season (April) until the end (June).

They plan to hire six sherpas who would be actively involved in the SAR operation.

The plan next year is to focus on the upper side of Mount Everest, known as the ‘death zone’ (Camp 4 and above). The operation this year concentrated on Camp 3 and below.

Azim said the Nepal government had categorised Hawari as a “missing person” and they need to find his body or at least any traces of him like shoes, jacket, or equipment.

Without any traces of him, they will fail to get a death certificate and this will affect the pension and other benefits that should go to Hawari’s wife and children.

The SAR operation planned for next year will be funded by the remaining fund from the state and federal government.

Previously, the federal and Penang governments had allocated RM1.48 million and RM500,000 respectively for the SAR efforts.

Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow expressed his hope that the SAR operation next year will succeed in finding Hawari, adding that the state government will help in any way they can.
