Bad news book lovers, yet another bookstore will be closing its doors in Malaysia at the end of August this year.

According to reports by Free Malaysia Today, Borders Malaysia, a popular bookstore chain, will be ending its operations on August 31 this year.

The closure of its online store took place at the end of May, while the outlet located in Bangsar Village 2 will remain open until July 31.

We are truly grateful for the trust and loyalty you have shown us and we would not have been able to come this far without you. Although our journey is coming to an end, our commitment to our customers remains unchanged. We will ensure that you receive the best customer service until the very end.

Berjaya Books Sdn Bhd

Berjaya Books Sdn Bhd, the operator of Borders Malaysia, expressed their gratitude to their customers and assured them of their unwavering commitment to providing excellent customer service until the very end.

Despite the closure, they acknowledged the trust and loyalty of their customers, emphasizing that their journey would not have been possible without their support.

Borders Group Inc, the parent company, had previously liquidated all its stores after filing for bankruptcy in 2011.

The news of Borders Malaysia’s closure led to some netizens reflecting on their experiences with the bookstore.

One Twitter user, @nobodybaechuu, shared heartfelt memories, stating how Borders had been a safe space for her throughout their childhood.

She reminisced about spending hours in the store, from reading picture books as a young child to going on her first date and sharing favorite mangas with her then partner.

The user also expressed gratitude for Borders being a place where she could be dropped off by her busy parents.

End of childhood. Thank you borders for giving me a safe space to hang out. This is a bit sappy, but borders has watched me grow from a smol lil girl reading picture books on the floor to a young adult on her first date eagerly showing off her favorite mangas.

Another Twitter user, @thekhayalan15 too expressed her sadness over the closure of yet another bookstore.

She described bookstores as therapeutic spaces, allowing one to physically touch and smell books, which they found different from reading on screens.

She also questioned whether this closure was a side effect of technological advancements and shared their own experience of their father encouraging them to read and swap books with friends.

I still get excited at the sight of books! Growing up my dad used to encourage me to read. I would swap books, comics with my friends. Fun days really. Now I’m encouraging my kids to do the same too- buy them books, read to them. I want them to feel the thrill of reading.

Many others also took to social media to share their deep appreciation for physical books and passing on the joy of reading to the next generation, hoping to instill a love for books in their own children.

The closure of Borders Malaysia marks the end of an era for book lovers, but the impact and memories it created will continue to resonate with those who cherished their time spent in the bookstore.
