A toddler in Bera, Pahang, is believed to have suffered from acute nicotine poisoning.

The incident, which occurred on May 30, involved a two-year-old girl with no history of chronic illness.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Health (MOH), the child’s grandfather discovered her exhibiting symptoms such as coughing, vomiting, and difficulty breathing.

The grandfather also noticed a disposable electronic cigarette device near the child.

It is suspected that the child either inhaled or ingested liquid from the device.

The child was subsequently taken to Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital (HoSHAS) in Temerloh, Pahang, where she received breathing assistance in the Child Intensive Care Unit.

During treatment, the child experienced two convulsions, but her condition has since stabilized, and she is breathing without the aid of a respirator.

The statement also pointed out that although initially considered a probable case of EVALI (Electronic Vape Associated Lung Injury), the clinical findings did not meet the criteria outlined in the 2021 Clinical Practice Guidelines on Management of E-Cigarette or Vaping Product Use-Associated Lung Injury (EVALI).

High levels of nicotine were detected in the child’s urine test, and the electronic cigarette device found at the scene has been sent to a laboratory for further analysis.

The patient’s condition was diagnosed as an Acute Life Threatening Event Secondary to Possible Alleged Nicotine Ingestion Complicated with Seizure.

Additionally, the Ministry of Health warned the public about the harmful effects of smoking products, including electronic cigarettes.

Nicotine poisoning from tobacco or electronic cigarette liquid can lead to immediate symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, vomiting, and seizures. This danger applies to all users, including children. Prolonged nicotine exposure, particularly in children, can negatively impact brain development.
