Malaysian actress Janna Nick has come under serious fire for mocking those who want a work-life balance.

In a video posted by @studiosembang, Janna is seen discussing the topic of having a work-life balance with fellow actress Amelia Henderson.

I always realise that the generation nowadays wants to have a work-life balance. I am sorry but I only got a work-life balance when I turned 28 after I had a certain amount (of savings), after buying two houses and after I had a car.

She added that she was not trying to show off by listing out her achievements but instead was trying to put out the message that she “could only relax after securing certain things in her life”.

If you have yet to achieve even the first goal in your life, you don’t ever think of having a work-life balance unless your parents are rich or you want to marry a rich man. Then you can do that.

Amelia, who was also in the video, was seen agreeing and laughing along with Janna.

Since going viral, the video has sparked the anger of netizens on social media, with many alleging the two had mocked those wanting to preserve their mental health while working.

Twitter user @TheVenusDarling said:

I wish nothing but hell for people who normalise struggling economically and then flexing that they went through the same thing and came out alright. Not everyone can survive it and that shouldn’t be normal. Some of us a disabled and struggle just staying alive. You might as well tell me that I should just be dead at this point because I haven’t suffered at work as much as you have.

She added:

Unless you’re contributing to the conversation by calling out exploitative work practices, you should not speak. Normalising ‘the grind’ makes it look like we’re asking to be exploited. You are holding back our progress in the fight for liveable wages.

Glorifying overworking and disregarding a person’s mental health is just not it. Not everybody wants that hustle life. What’s wrong with wanting work life balance?? I believe having work life balance gives you better results in life. Not everybody wants to buy 2 houses at the age of 28.

Meanwhile, Twitter user @bandten said:

The fact that she literally has mental health issues while advocating hustle culture over work-life balance doesn’t make it sound any better.

Coming to her friend’s rescue, Amelia later posted a series of tweets attempting to explain to netizens that Janna was not mocking the culture of having a work-life balance.

In her tweet she said:

Janna wasn’t laughing at anyone who wants to achieve a work-life balance. She’s laughing because only she knows how much WORK she had to put in to achieve her own work life balance. When you come from a difficult financial background, before you have the room to consider having a work-life balance, you first have to think about how to put food on the table for you and your family. That’s where she’s coming from.

She further noted that everyone has opinions and acknowledged that there are some people who do not seek out financial goals in life and said that that is okay.

But this episode is about Jana, her life and her journey. I agree with what Jana said. I think there will be people out there who do as well. take what resonates only, if this view of life is not what you agree with, that’s ok, your opinion is right for you!! this is just a different one, and if it doesn’t suit you, nobody is forcing you to agree ok?

These tweets further riled up netizens.

“I am so sorry Amelia, but to me, it seems like she did find the idea of wanting to have a work-life balance as something funny. I am sorry that our generation wants the best for both our career and mental health. if your mental health’s ruined, your career will follow suit. She straight up laughed after stating the ‘generation sekarang ni nak work-life balance’ and then she stopped and started laughing. Dia bolehlah nak achieve that by the age of 28. most of us, yang marhaen ni dahlah underpaid. Janna needs to see a bigger scope.”

Amelia, she is obviously laughing at “nowadays generation wanting work life balance” no matter how many times i replay the conversation, tu yang i faham. If she wants to talk about her difficult life, why should she mention specifically the present generation and people’s choices of wanting work life balance? It is either you sendiri tak faham apa yang you sembang dalam tu atau you’re just insensitive. We get it yall not from rich families. SO DO US. We all have our difficulties. You shouldn’t think you suffer so much more sampai you boleh borak camtu.
