A group of people was recently caught on video “protesting” the sale of alcohol in a local 7-Eleven.

A man wearing a vest from the unidentified group could also be seen handing a paper to a woman believed to be a store employee.

Netizens disagreed with the move and said the group should have met with the owner of 7-Eleven instead of harassing the employees because the employees aren’t the ones setting the sale policy.

They said people of all races and religions live in the country and that there are more important things to worry about such as rape cases.

Some wondered why selling alcohol would be an issue for those who don’t drink it.

Another person said that the protestors should have made their grievances known to the local authority (PBT). The person claimed that shops had to apply for a license through PBT in order to sell alcohol at their business premises.

This move was supported by a netizen who shared how the residents in his neighbourhood successfully stopped alcohol sales by writing a formal letter.

ISMA is carrying out a similar protest

While the name of the group and the location of the 7-Eleven is unconfirmed, there seems to be a similar effort to protest the sale of alcohol at other 7-Eleven stores by Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (ISMA).

On ISMA’s Facebook page, they posted a statement and a live video showing their visit to 7-Eleven Residensi Rimbun to hand over a protest letter.

The group was accompanied by members of NGO Akademi Dakwah Anak Muda (ADAM) and the president of Surau Al-Hidayah Kampung Sungai Tangkas.

ISMA pointed out that all eight staff in the store are Muslims and more than 70% of the homeowners in the area are Muslims.

They also visited 7-Eleven Hentian Kajang to hand over a letter of protest and were accompanied by the president of Surau Asy-Syakirin Taman Tenaga.

7-Eleven Hentian Kajang allegedly has seven Muslim staff.

I’m curious. Why does 7-Eleven sell alcohol? Who’s the CEO? Who’s the chairman?
