Earlier today, the Election Commission (EC) confirmed that there would be a four-cornered contest in Simpang Renggam.

The four candidates vying for the seat are Pakatan Harapan’s Maszlee Malik, Barisan Nasional’s Hasni Mohammad, Perikatan Nasional’s Fazrul Kamat and Pejuang’s Kamal Kusmin.

PH candidate Maszlee Malik said candidates contesting for the Simpang Renggam seat plan to have a debate a day or two before polling, Free Malaysia Today reported.

The debate would help voters to get to know the candidates and their vision and mission for the constituency before voting day.

The topics will cover national issues as well as local issues in Simpang Renggam.

So far, the former education minister said BN candidate Hasni Mohammad had agreed to participate in the debate.

Both Maszlee and Hasni agreed to debate in a mature and gentlemanly manner. The debate will likely be held at the Simpang Renggam district council office.

Previously, caretaker prime minister Ismail Sabri turned down Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s proposal to have the prime ministerial candidates from the three main coalitions debate on policy matters in the run-up to GE15.

According to Malay Mail, he said it’s not Malaysia’s “culture” to have prime ministerial candidates debate in public.

Debate is not our culture. We have never done it before and it does not give any benefits. If we let him debate, he will give his promise, manifesto, even the moon and the stars will be promised. So I think it is not necessary. We have never organised a debate before elections and we form governments based on people’s confidence in us.
