Perak is expected to be among the first states to dissolve its legislative assembly with Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohammad set to seek the state ruler, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah’s consent tomorrow.

“(I) will seek an audience with DYMM Tuanku on Wednesday afternoon,” Saarani, who is also the Kota Tampan assemblyman was quoted as saying by New Straits Times.

However, Saarani said that the state legislative assembly can only be dissolved with Sultan Nazrin’s consent.

Yesterday, caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, in announcing the dissolution of the 14th Parliament of Malaysia, advised all state chiefs to dissolve their respective state legislative assembly together with the Parliament.

This said Ismail, to not burden the rakyat and to save the government from spending further for separate elections.

With yesterday’s announcement, the 15th general election must be held within the next 60 days from the dissolution.

Saarani, from UMNO, became the 14th Perak menteri besar after succeeding Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu from Bersatu following a vote of no confidence against the latter in the state legislative assembly on 4 December 2020.

The incident was triggered following the exit of Bersatu from the PH coalition following the infamous Sheraton Move, which also led to the downfall of the PH Federal Government in the same year.
