An 11-year-old boy named Muhammad Hafdan Qurbani Azhar died after getting assaulted by a 16-year-old suspect at a welfare home for orphans and the poor in Kuantan, Pahang.

Hafdan was kicked and choked on Sunday, 20 March, over an RM4 dispute.

The suspect accused Hafdan of stealing the money and grew irate when Hafdan did not take the matter seriously.

New Straits Times reported that the warden rushed Hafdan to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) but was pronounced dead at about 4.30pm.

The suspect has been remanded to assist in the investigation.

“There’s no logic,” says Hafdan’s aunt

Hafdan’s 49-year-old adoptive aunt, Faridah Latif (pic left), said she couldn’t believe her nephew died over RM4 because he was a kind and generous boy. She said it should never have happened.

The deceased once said that his friend owed him money, but his mother often asked the deceased not to be calculative and just halalkan (spare) his friend’s debt.

Hafdan’s aunt, Faridah Latif, told Utusan.

Since then, Hafdan has always halalkan his friends’ debts because he wanted to help his friends and to go to heaven.

Thus, it was especially cruel for Hafdan to be accused of stealing money and dying over false claims.

Faridah told Utusan that she was very close with Hafdan and he never failed to cheer up the home whenever he was back in Kampung Gelugor, Kuantan.

In fact, Hafdan dreamt to build a treehouse with a slide last January to make a space to play with his younger sibling.

He built the treehouse on a Jering tree beside his father’s home and workshop and told his sibling to wait for him to return from the welfare home to play with him.

Hafdan’s absence is felt by the whole family. According to New Straits Times, he was buried at the Kampung Gelugor Muslim cemetery yesterday, 22 March.

The Regent of Pahang Tengku Mahkota Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah paid the family a visit and conveyed his condolences.

Utusan reported that Hafdan was first sent to the welfare home for religious studies.

He returned to the centre on Thursday, 17 March, to start a new session of classes before the senior student allegedly beat him to death on Sunday.
