The various Marvel movies and shows released have been met with varied responses. Some didn’t like the different genres, styles, directions and more.

Fortunately, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania may put some fans at ease because there is a sense of nostalgia with a feel-good vibe.

In the third Ant-Man movie, Scott Lang and his family get sucked into the Quantum Realm after an experiment goes wrong. While trying to get back to their world, they are forced to contend with a ruthless villain (It’s Kang, of course you know who it is).

The film sees the return of Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd), Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). Kathryn Newton plays the older Cassie Lang in this instalment.

What to expect?

At its core, it’s a story about family. The family is once again whole with the return of an older Cassie Lang.

They’re glad to be back together but they still have to figure out their dynamics after being away at various times.

Of course, no good adventure can start without some family secrets, miscommunication, and tinkering at the lab.

I enjoyed discovering the Quantum Realm and thought the visual artists did it well. The Quantum Realm that we were first introduced to when they saved Janet was only the ‘top layer’ so to speak.

In this film, we dive in deeper and discover that there’s a whole new civilisation with its own rules and quirks.

In an interview with director Peyton Reed, he said visualizing and creating the Quantum Realm was the most exciting thing while making the film.

The team pored over references from electron microscope photography and even heavy metal magazines in the 70s and 80s, which resulted in a very vivid world that is known as the Quantum Realm.

Reed also said some of his favourite “movie details” are in the Quantum Realm scenes.

I think when you see the movie, there’s an incredible amount of detail in the Quantum Realm that you may not be able to catch them all the first time around.

While we’re introduced to Kang briefly in Loki, it’s only in Quantumania that we really get to know the feel and force of his villainy.

The villainous Kang is portrayed brilliantly by Jonathan Majors and fans will be eager to see his next plans for the heroes.

We also get to know Janet a little better and what a resourceful woman she was during all those years alone in a new world.

The story also finally shows us more of who Cassie is, her capabilities, and her motivations.

For those who are worried about the humour in the film, I can say that it felt organic and doesn’t seem forced. It’s true to Scott Lang’s character and personality.

Should you watch or skip it?

Overall, it was an enjoyable movie to watch so it’s a yes from me. The film doesn’t dwell on family problems for long so for those who are allergic to feelings, this one’s safe for you.

If you’re feeling jaded with the quantity or quality of Marvel movies, this film might give you hope that good things are coming and it’s just getting started.

There’s a reason why Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is kicking off MCU Phase 5!

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is showing in Malaysian cinemas on 16 February 2023 onwards. Remember to stay back for two post-credit scenes.
