Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny comes 15 years after the poorly received Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The fifth and final instalment in the Indiana Jones franchise sees Harrison Ford reprise his last portrayal of archaeologist Indiana Jones.

Returning to the franchise are John Rhys-Davies and Karen Allen as Sallah and Marion Ravenwood, while new cast members include Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen.

In this film, Indiana Jones and his goddaughter, Helena Shaw (played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge), race against time to retrieve the mythical Dial of Destiny before it falls into the hands of Jurgen Voller (played by Mads Mikkelsen), a former Nazi during World War II who was hired by NASA.

What to expect?

There are nostalgic elements scattered throughout the film. It starts with a flashback into the past during one of Indy’s many adventures and encounters with the Nazis.

It then fast forwards to the current day where Indy has put his adventuring days on the back burner and is now an old and tired archaeology professor.

His world turns upside down when his goddaughter pays a sudden visit and then leaves him to fend for himself for a bit.

The movie felt long at certain parts but didn’t feel boring as it kept the story going. The comical banter between the characters that was a classic in the previous films was present.

Mads Mikkelsen, as always, played the villain part well. The audience could feel Jurgen Voller’s determination turned to desperation to fulfil his mission at all costs.

Another notable character in the film was Ethann Isidore’s Teddy Kumar who is Helena’s resourceful young sidekick.

His character filled the vacuum left behind by Ke Huy Quan’s Short Round. That said, it’s still a shame that Short Round is not in the final Indiana Jones instalment.

Since it’s the final movie in the franchise, there was no telling whether the characters would end up dead so I think it would keep the audience glued to their seats.

Overall, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a good end and farewell for Indy and the gang.

Should you watch or skip it?

It’s infinitely better than Crystal Skull. For fans of the Indiana Jones franchise, it doesn’t hurt to go on an adventure with Indy one last time.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be showing in cinemas nationwide on 29 June 2023.
