As the world marks International Women’s Day 2021 on March 8, a septuagenarian revels in her advanced years.

Mona Chin, 78, is leading by example on living a meaningful life to the full until the very end.

As a veteran nurse, Chin had a lifelong nursing career in England and Singapore.

Despite having retired more than 20 years ago, Chin actively sought to engage people’s lives from day one by sharing her accumulated wisdom and experiences.

Chin rejoices in putting her skills and experience to good use at a free clinic in Sentul, which she has been doing since the millennium.

The free clinic, by the non-profit organisation HOPE Worldwide Malaysia, provides free medication and consultation to the poor and needy.

Chin sees society as full of needs, with many dark places in the lives of people. From deep losses and grief to deep anger and sorrow.

“But there is also hope. Sometimes, all it takes is a little love and kindness to encourage and build up others.

“Big or small, we all can do something to teach what is good,” she said.

Chin, who works five days a week, attributed her age-defying energy level to healthy ageing.

When she was younger, Chin started to put in the effort to be healthy.

Lifestyle, such as a healthy diet and physical activity, is essential.

Psychological wellbeing, such as a sense of purpose and meaning in life, is also key to healthy ageing.
