[UPDATE] Malaysia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has responded that Consulate General of Malaysia’s Office in New York has not received any official reports from any government agency involved, in relation to Malaysians who were infected or died as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States. Official procedure dictates that any death involving foreign nationals will be formally notified by the United States government to the Foreign Office.

As the novel coronavirus continues to spike in the United States, the Malaysia Association of America (MAA) confirms that 10 Malaysians living in New York have died from Covid-19.

Speaking to The Star, the association’s president Kim Bong said that he was aware that at least 30 Malaysians in New York are infected with the virus.

Among the Malaysian Covid-19 deaths are two MAA committee members, of whom one was a restaurant owner and the other was infected on the subway.

Kim also told the English daily that a Malaysian couple living in Brooklyn, NY also lost the battle to the coronavirus.

As the reality of the pandemic hit in March, the number of Covid-19 cases in New York skyrocketed, with the highest number of confirmed cases of any state in the United States.

A state of emergency was declared on 16th March, two weeks after the first reported Covid-19 case on 1st March.

Kim said the problem lies in people’s slow response to take precautionary measures, such as wearing face masks, at the beginning of the pandemic.
