One Dead, One Seriously Injured By Homemade Bomb In Gerik

The duo was believed to have brought the homemade explosives to the Lata Kekabu Recreation centre in Lenggong, Gerik on Monday.

A homemade bomb exploded at the Lata Kekabu Recreation Centre in Lenggong, Gerik yesterday, killing one man and seriously injuring another.

The deceased was identified as Amiruddin Khairudin, 44, while his friend was identified as Azlan Ali, 40.

“Amiruddin’s body has been sent to the Gerik Hospital for a post-mortem. The injured man was sent to the Taiping Hospital for further treatment,” Perak police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri was quoted as saying by The Star.

According to Mohd Yusri, the police were alerted of the incident at about 3.10pm yesterday.

A team was dispatched to the location to investigate, where they found the victims.

Mohd Yusri also warned the public that fish bombing activity is a serious offence.

“We advise the people not to be involved in illegal activities like using explosives to catch fish and abusing a recreational area as a location for fishing,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.

Those caught to catch fish using explosives can be charged under Section 26(1)(c) of the Fisheries Act 1985, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

The offence is punishable under Section 25(b) of the Fisheries Act, which provides for a maximum fine of RM20,000 or a jail term of up to two years or both, upon conviction.
