Samsung Galaxy Watch4 [First Impressions]

At Galaxy Unpacked this year, Samsung announced the release of four new exciting devices.

The very first device featured was the Galaxy Watch4. At a glance it looks like any other wrist watch. It is neither square nor thick like most smartwatches, perfect for those who want all the health and smart features but none of the telltale looks.

The White Box

The Galaxy Watch4 came in an eco-friendly white box, no plastics. The model that I got is the black 40mm version. There’s a bigger 44mm variant, and both sizes come in three colours.

Inside the box was the watch itself and a wireless charger cable. No USB charger included.

You might want to check the back of the box first, for a guide that tells you if the watch would fit your wrist. Because I had to wear mine on its largest configuration for it to fit.

Also, the watch does not seem to be ambidextrous. It has to be worn on the left wrist with the buttons facing towards the hand.

On Its Own

The model of the Galaxy Watch4 that we get in Malaysia only has GPS, no LTE. That means it needs a phone to work. Thankfully it will work with any android phone.

In this case, I paired it with a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G.

Pairing with another samsung device is easy enough, just bring the two devices close and the phone will detect the watch automatically.

Samsung has always mastered the smartwatch user experience and it is no different here. Features are introduced to the user slowly. For example, it took more than a day before the watch told me that it could be locked with a PIN.

This gradual introduction to features helps, especially with non tech savvy users, because the Watch4 is just packed with them.

The First Few Days

The customizability options for watch faces are wonderful. Samsung understands that there’s two main pieces of information that most people want to see on their watch: time and date. The rest can remain hidden.

It seems like common sense, but a lot of other smartwatches try to either do too much or too little. Here, most of the pre-installed watch faces feature time and date. Simple, but a lot of fun.

I also find that the workout detection is a bit generous. It counted my visit to the grocery store as a workout. I’d like to think it is, but I don’t think it is.

There are a lot more things that the watch can do, buried under its easy to use swipe and dial interface. Features like body composition and Samsung Pay.

More Coming Soon

For the next few days I’ll be wearing the Galaxy Watch4 and see how it fairs. Will it get scratches? Can it really tell me my stress levels? And can it replace one of those oximeters?
