Malaysia’s fourth wave of Covid-19 infections is slowly but surely becoming a reality as the Health Ministry reports the number of new cases has surged past the 2k mark – the highest in 41 days.

Of the 2,148 new cases reported today (15 April), Sarawak topped the states with 512 cases, followed by Selangor (459) and Kelantan (221).

Other states with triple digit cases today are: Sabah (202), Johor (182), Kuala Lumpur (171) and Penang (134).

KKM Pleads To Keep Interstate Ban To Prevent Balik Kampung Wave

The Health Ministry has urged the government to postpone lifting the interstate travel ban ahead of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations come May, reports The Vibes.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba explained that this is due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases that are not showing any signs of stabilising.

Concerns are also mounting on the emergence of new variants of the coronavirus emerging within several communities, most notably the South African B.1.351 variant.

Yesterday (14 April), Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah announced that there are already 17 cases of the South African variant in Malaysia.

This particular variant is not only more transmissible but the vaccines are less effective against it, which may impact the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.
