It is a tragic loss for Malaysia when Universiti Teknologi Mara’s (UiTM) Sg Buloh staff nurse, Artini Dzolkarnaini, who was pregnant with her fifth child died yesterday morning (2 Feb) due to Covid-19.

The 41-year-old was found positive with the virus on the second week of January during a screening exercise. Artini was a staff nurse at the Rehabilitation Medicine Department of UiTM specialist centre in Sungai Buloh.

Though she had no symptoms, she was warded due to her pregnancy.

Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse and Artini had to be intubated as she struggled to breathe.

A colleague told Malaysiakini that doctors had to perform an emergency Cesarean to save her baby. “To save her, they needed to save her baby first,” said the colleague.

Her baby girl was safely born on 22nd January at Artini’s 30th week of pregnancy. Unfortunately due to her premature birth, the newborn is currently at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the same hospital.

Malaysians mourn the tragic loss of a frontliner

As news of Artini’s death broke, several of her colleagues took to social media to honour her memory, remembering her as a dedicated nurse and a doting wife and mother.

Artini was also the first UiTM nurse to author a book, Penjagaan Dan Pemulihan Jantung (Coronary Treatment and Care) which was published last year.

Malaysians also took sorrow in her passing, and several kind-hearted individuals have begun fundraising to support her family, including her prematurely born daughter.

Fundraising calls for premature baby (preemie) clothing, diapers and baby supplies are also ongoing at local preemie support groups.

TRP sends our condolences to the friends and family of Artini Dzolkarnaini. May she rest in peace.
