Have you noticed a super tall building under construction in Kuala Lumpur lately? You might’ve at first thought it was the TRX building before recalling that the TRX was already complete.

Actually, that strange glassy building you saw in the midst of being built is the Merdeka PNB188, a.k.a the latest addition to Malaysia’s skyscrapers and soon to be the second tallest building in the world after the Burj Khalifa.

Twitter user Skyscrapers MY shared several facts about the building through a thread posted on Twitter.

Standing taller than the Petronas Twin Towers, TRX and KL Tower, the Merdeka PNB118 is predicted to be completed in 2021. It will be 118 floors high and is situated next to Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara.

The building belongs to and is developed by one of the largest fund management companies in Malaysia, Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and designed by Australian firm Fender Katsalidis Architects. The same firm that designed one of the tallest residential buildings in the world, the Eureka Tower in Melbourne, Australia.

You can watch the firm’s founder, Karl Fender talking about the Merdeka PNB118 in the video below:

Speaking of its design, @SkyscrapersMY explains that the Merdeka PNB118’s unique silhouette was actually inspired by the image of Tunku Abdul Rahman when he raised his arm up to shout “Merdeka” on 31 August 1957. The tall spire located at the top of the tower symbolises Tunku’s arm.

The tower’s base is modeled from the diamond-shaped motifs of Malay Songket. While, the rest of the building is covered in glass from top to bottom, making it look like a beautiful piece of crystal.

The entire complex is being built in three phases. The first phase of development is the completion of the 118 floors of the building. The second phase will consist of a mall and park. Then, the third phase will add on three residential towers surround the main building.

The first and second phase is predicted to complete by 2021, while the third phase will only be completed in 2024.

The main building will house an 83-floor office space, a 17-floor hotel, and an observatory with a sky lobby, restaurants and other touristy facilities at the top-most floors.

@SkyscrapersMY shared that a glass lift will reportedly be used to transport visitors to the observatory, meaning that visitors will be able to enjoy a beautiful view of the city on their way up.

At night, the tower will be lit up by light strips that connect the buildings geometric edges, giving it a different and futuristic vibe compared to the other buildings in KL.

Getting to the building should be easy enough, as the Maharajalela monorail station is expected to be in walking distance from the tower.
